Pets' Teeth and Overall Health
Playtime provides a good opportunity to improve the health of your pet’s teeth and gums. William H. Craig, DVM, of San Antonio, suggests giving your dog rawhide chews to help keep its teeth clean and healthy. “They're soft enough that they won't damage the teeth, but hard enough to require prolonged chewing, which helps wipe the teeth clean.” Look for a rawhide chew toy that’s braided or contains enzymes that help break down plaque (look for such wording on the package). Just be sure to choose a chew that your pet can’t swallow whole to avoid the risk of choking. And make sure to throw away bones when they get small enough to be swallowed. Dr. Craig says large knotted rope chews are helpful as well, but very hard things like nylabones, cow hooves and butcher bones can be dangerous and harmful to teeth. And remember that with any chew item, adult supervision is recommended.
