Pre-Thanksgiving RED LAKE Walleyes - Early Ice

Pre-Thanksgiving Tactics

Ahhh, here we are, yet again, at the pre-Thanksgiving madness stage of the holidays. If you're like me (and I pray that you're not), running around like a headless chicken trying to cross EVERY singletand dot EVERY singleiis certainly not out of the ordinary! I typically stay up for 24 hours straight in preparation for this big day—shopping, cooking, cleaning, yelling; cooking, yelling; cooking, cooking, cooking; yelling!

Who am I yelling at? My brood! So this year, I thought I'd handle things a little differently. I thought to myself,Hmmmm…maybe if I take the hubby and kids to a fun show right before all of the maddening festivities begin, everyone will be in a mellower mood.I wouldn't have to yell to get a few extra pairs of hands to help out and the house would perhaps remain in some acceptable order. I took everyone to seePlayhouse Disney Live! on Tour (the show travels so keep an eye out). We all absolutely loved it! The scenery, characters, we were enthralled! My parents used to bribe us kids by taking us to see the Radio City Christmas show every year. Upon experiencing the grand spectacle of this show, we would thank them by turning into eager beavers—helping out our mom in any way possible during the Thanksgiving holiday.

Fast-forward: It's Thanksgiving eve, I am cooking like a fiend in the kitchen. All of the pilots on the stove are going strong, the oven is working on its third pie. I need my troops to help set the table, peel some potatoes and snap some beans. Amazingly, I only have to call out to them once, by gosh—a first! Everyone is front and center, pretty anxious to help. Smelling salts, somebody! WOW, everyone comes through for me this year, and I might even manage to get four hours' sleep, another first! Methinks I'll try this form of bribery (taking the family to a show) at Christmas.

I have 14 guests coming and the menu is our traditional fare—rice and peas (a Jamaican dish), candied yams casserole with marshmallows, fresh string beans, collard greens with ham hocks, 'Shelly's mac and cheese (always a BIG hit—thank you, my buddy Michelle!), stuffing, potato salad and of course the traditional three meats: turkey, ham and roast beef.
