Study: Coconut Oil As A Cure For Dry Skin
The claim: If you’re not hooked on coconut oil yet, you might want to start slathering it on. A new study in theInternational Journal of Dermatologyshows that topical virgin coconut oil decreased water loss in the skin of people with atopic dermatitis, an inflammatory condition where the skin’s natural moisture-locking barrier isn’t working well. Even if you don’t have the condition, chances are you could still use a little moisture, as skin naturally loses its ability to retain water with age.
[sidebar]The research: Researchers asked 117 atopic dermatitis sufferers to put virgin coconut oil or mineral oil, and nothing else, on their skin each morning and each evening after bathing. After 8 weeks, the coconut oil group had a 20-point improvement in their skin's ability to retain water, double the effects of the mineral oil group’s 10-point gain, which was measured using the TEWAmeter TM2010, a tool designed to measure skin's water retention ability. What’s more, the severity of the coconut oil applicants’ atopic dermatitis decreased by 68% in the two-month period, while those using mineral only saw a 38% reduction.
The bottom line:No matter what condition your skin is in, adding quickly-absorbing virgin coconut oil to your daily skin care routine can hydrate and smooth your skin. “This research demonstrates how good virgin coconut oil is as a moisturizer,” says study author Mara Evangelista, PhD.
